Clive Barkers Book of Blood is a British horror film by John Harrison from the year 2008. The film is based on the two short stories The Book of Blood and The Book of Blood (A Postscript) - On Jerusalem Street by Clive Barker, which form the background story of his horror anthology Books of Blood. The writer was also involved in the production of the film.
Wyburd, a hired killer who specializes in the removal of tattoos, has abducted his next victim from a dinner in a secluded cabin in the woods. The skin of the young man is decorated with numerous scars in the form of characters. Wyburd makes him an offer: if the boy told him his story and this would move him, he would have come quickly to death. The young man agrees to the plan and tells his story:
Mary Florescu, professor of parapsychology and author, and her partner Reg Fuller investigate an alleged haunted house in which a young girl was killed in gruesome ways. During their search they come across Simon McNeal, poses as a medium and fortuneteller. The three of them explore the house and actually seem to show strange phenomena: Fonts appear, the technical equipment goes crazy and Mary is plagued by nightmares. On the body of Simon show scars. Between Mary and Simon crackling sexual tension and the two sleep together. Then, apparently to take possession of Mary and a spirit that sees a fountain, which she used in her childhood as an already access to the spirit world.
Mary and Simon smell a bestseller, but a call from the lab destroyed Mary's dream: Simon had played everything and produced with the aid of gunpowder, sulfur and other aids, the ghostly apparitions. Simon, however, insists that the last phenomenon was real and tried to prove. He goes back into his bedroom. Suddenly, the unplugged technology begins to play mad. Dragonflies flit around Mary, and even the skeptical engineers panics. When the two run upwards to Simon coming towards them ghosts. Reg startled and falls down the stairs. He dies immediately. Mary sees Simon tries on a whole stream of spirits, to perpetuate their stories. Mary ends with the spirits of a deal. Every night write down the spirits of her story to Simon and Mary translated the characters for her books. Simon eventually managed to escape.
Although Wyburd shows little satisfied with the story, but quickly kills Simon. His skin, he packed in a suitcase. When he wakes up after a nap, the whole room is filled with blood. The dead continue to write. Wyburd drowning in blood. Mary enters the secluded cabin in the woods and take the skin back to him.
Clive Barkers Book of Blood to the beginning of a whole series of Barker adaptations from the anthology Books of Blood. The film introduces the main plot of the Hexalogie dar. Clive Barker himself participated as a producer on the project. The film was shot among other things, the Dundas Castle in Scotland and in London. Doug Bradley, the star of the Hellraiser films has a guest appearance as an occultist.
The previous reviewers are very subdued. Most critics complain about the lack of tension and the predictable story. Emphasis was mostly the atmosphere and the ambience of the film.
