Freedom Writers is a US-American film drama by Richard LaGravenese from the year 2007.
Erin Gruwell is set mid-1990s at Wilson Classical High School in Long Beach as an English teacher. She says her superiors, she had become a teacher because she wanted to change after the race riots in 1992, the world.
Prevails at the school - just like in the city - Violence between members of different ethnic groups. Gruwell hear from their students, which is the main objective of mere survival.
One day, they confiscated a racist drawing that represents a student who is angry about it. She asks the students if they the word Holocaust is a term, but nobody responds.
Gruwell recommends the diaries of Anne Frank as a school reading; impressed by the reading, the students want to invite Miep Gies, the person of Anne Frank was hiding. They collect money for their travel to be able to finance them. The writing is on the experiences of their own homework. The students learned during a trip to the Simon Wiesenthal Center on the Holocaust. Gruwell pays some of the necessary expenses from their own pockets. She wants to teach the students in this way, hatred and violence that lead to nothing. Impressed by what is written Gruwell proposes to publish the book as a book under the name Freedom Writers Diary.
In addition to her work as a teacher, Gruwell takes on several side jobs to buy for students to readings, as the department head refused to support it - on the grounds that they would get the books only in the defective condition or not return at all. Due to their heavy workload Gruwell neglected her personal life, and after some time her husband Scott Casey asked for a divorce. The plot is based on the published in 1999 book, The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them, which said Erin Gruwell, the real, existing together with their students. The German edition appeared in 2007 Author House Publisher: Freedom Writers: How to have a young teacher and 150 vulnerable young people and their environment changed through writing.
The movie was filmed in Long Beach and Los Angeles. He played in the cinemas of the United States until the 11th March 2007 approximately 36.6 million U.S. dollars this book.
