The War of the Worlds (engl. Originaltitel: The War of the Worlds) is one of the most famous and important works of HG Wells. The book was published in 1898, the German translation was published by Gottlieb August Criiwell 1,901th Became famous as a radio play War of the Worlds, and in several adaptations.
This appeared in 1898, for the science-fiction writers essential, work of HG Wells' Martians attack in three-legged fighting machines, the United Kingdom in order to gain from this, the raw materials and water-rich earth. The Earth's military is hopelessly inferior to the alien invaders, and must look at the destruction of the cities. Only the bacteria of the earth can defeat the Martians whose immune system is not adapted.
War of the Worlds was created as a satire on the colonial policy of the empire, and exchanged this, the roles of conquerors and victims to the detriment of the British. An additional bad sideswipe was the fact that the most primitive forms of life known at that time saved the British Empire.
The book was directed by Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater radio play than in the form of a fictional feature after an adaptation by Howard Koch, the American CBS radio station on the evening before Halloween, on 30 Broadcast in October 1938. To a location for England to Grover's Mill (New Jersey) was transferred to the United States and the story accordingly.
The radio play led to severe irritation, according to newspaper reports, the population of New York and New Jersey, held partly the radio play for an authentic reportage and feared an actual attack aliens. The reporting of these incidents made the show and hence the young Orson Welles famous. Some descriptions of a nationwide mass panic should be regarded with caution. The communication and literary research literature, led a field study by Hadley Cantril in the year 1940, put the headless too happy hysteria expressed in question. Rather, Orson Welles was in the middle caught in a media war, a report imputed Orson Welles even have been responsible for the death of a man. Orson Welles and his scriptwriter Howard Koch took advantage of the spectacle as a career opportunity. Welles later admitted on record that he had not reckoned with the success of the radio play, and therefore made a reference to Halloween, at least, to stand out somehow.
Howard Koch, who in 1938 wrote the script for the radio play, has also processed in 1975 subject for the documentary feature film The Night That Panicked America, which describes the radio show and the reactions among the public. In 1997, a new recording of radio drama followed, directed by John de Lancie and speakers from the TV series Star Trek (including Leonard Nimoy, Gates McFadden) at the LA Theater Works.
In 1977 the WDR broadcast a German adaptation of the radio play by Klaus Schoning. The English original radio drama was interrupted by this time well-known radio journalist (Dieter Thoma, Lothar Dombrowski), which brought the English texts "translated" and so seemingly real news of the invasion. In spite of several scattered references to the fictional character, and clearly audible despite the age of the original recording of the original broadcast, there were many worried calls.
In 1953, the book, directed by Byron Haskin was filmed, with a play in the U.S. action. Since the animation of the three-legged fighting machines then be technically impossible or at least considered unaffordable (stop-motion did not seem realistic enough), invented it in place of flying machines, whose design is the most famous science-fiction spaceship designs of the counts. The George Pal production in 1954 was awarded an Oscar in the category of Visual Effects. In Germany, they came under the title War of the Worlds in the cinemas.
Christopher Priest's novel Sir Williams connected machine from 1976, the actions of Wells novels War of the Worlds and The Time Machine.
1978 was the concept album Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds by Jeff Wayne, based on the novel, in parts, however, departed from by this. Acted as a narrator in the original version of Richard Burton, 1980, published in the German version of Curd J
